Here are some of my favourite German bands:
The Braces
The Braces are around for more than 15 years. They broke up in the 90's and got back together in 2000.
They released 3 albums so far:
Ska Got Soul (Madbutcher Records) 2002
Blue Flame (Pork Pie) 1991
Prime Cut (Unicorn) 1989
I recommend their latest release 'Ska Got Soul'. Check out The Designer Song.
Alpha Boy School
Karsten Riedel, founder of the German band 'The Frits', started this band in 1999. They play a good mixture of Rock Steady, 2-Tone and Reggae.
Discography:
No Interest (Grover) 2003
Big Fight (Grover) 2001
Both albums are great. My favourite songs: No Excuse from Big Fight and a cover of the Cure's Boy's Don't Cry from No Interest.
Dr. Woggle & The Radio
Dr. Woggle is imho the best German ska band. Great mixture of Rock Steady, Reggae and Soul and an amazing live band. I've seen them at one of their first shows back in 1998 when they played as support for the Trojans. During the years they played clubs and festivals all over Europe and they are always leaving behind an enthusiastic crowd!
Discography:
Bigger Is Tough (Grover) 2003
Suitable (Elmo) 2001
Of course I recommend both albums. I like Bigger Is Tough more, though.
They have no sound files on their website, but I found some on amazon.de.
Frau Doktor
Frau Doktor are the 'local heroes' here. It's Ska, Punkrock and Soul with German lyrics and it's probably the only 'ska-punk' band that I really like. I've seen them many times and their shows are awesome (except the fact that I always get tons of bruises from people hitting me while dancing pogo ).
Discography:
Wunschkonzert (live) (Elmo) 2004
Penner Superdisco (Elmo) 2002
Dauercamper (Elmo) 2000
Muss! (Wolverine) 1998
Süße Ska Musik (self released) 1997
I recommend 'Wunschkonzert'. It's like a best of and I also like the design of the cd (I took some of the pics ). If you don't like live cd's: Penner Superdisco is also great.
Check out Alles Noch Schlimmer, Alte Maenner and Fuer Ein Ganzes Leben
AND: you can download their second release Muss! for free. All you have to do is to register at their website.
Yellow Umbrella
They broke up 2 years ago and did a rather impressive farewell show in their home town Dresden. More than 5,000 people came to this event!! Now they are back again with a slightly change in their line-up.
Dicography:
Rasta La Vista, Baby (a dvd of their farewell show in 2003)
Stoned-Steady - 2003
Brothers In Style (EP) - 2003 (split release with The Special Guests from Berlin)
Les Schuhkarton Tapes - 2002
Flight No. 20-8-3 - 2001
Marie Juana - 1999
Offbeat - 1996
I don't have their first two cd's, but I would recommend 'Flight No. 20-8-3 or 'Stoned-Steady'. Check out Modern Slavery and Rise & Fall.
And last but not least:
Ringo Ska
Not really my favourite band, but they are not bad. If you like the Beatles you should check them out! Ringo Ska play only Beatles songs, but in Jamaican style. They have 2 self released cd's so far - both can be purchased through their website. And I found a sound sample as well: She Loves You
